South Suburban Parks and Recreation

Youth Track Coach

June 2019 • Centennial, CO

What I liked

I loved having the ability to work with other coaches and learn from them while coaching the kids.

What I wish was different

I wish that there would be more training for our staff regarding what we should plan for workouts.

Advice

One piece of advice is that not everyday is the same. There will be times when the plan does not work out, but even if it doesn't, you can change your plan.

Field Supervisor

May 2016 - July 2019 • Greenwood Village, CO

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of hours, and working outside all of the time. Along with that, my boss was extremely easy to work with and fin to be around.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten paid more, and the coaches that I was working with were more informed and had less simple questions.

Advice

I would say to always greet anyone you meet with a smile, and the nicer you are to others, the easier problems are to solve, and the less hostile people will be if a mistake is made.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Centennial, CO

What I liked

I enjoyed the freedom in being able to choose some of the activities that we did at camp. While there were still some parameters, I appreciated the opportunities for creativity.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been better communication between staff members. Several staff members quit halfway through the summer and I would have liked to have seen better adaptability and a smoother transition.

Advice

Adaptability is an essential skill in this role. This job can be unpredictable and the environment is constantly changing. As such, flexibility is a necessary skill to manage those changes.

Head Lifeguard

May - August 2018 • Lone Tree, CO

What I liked

The responsibility and leadership that comes with being a head lifeguard, and being offered a full manager position next summer.

What I wish was different

I was given manager outright, because the managers there hadn't done a lot and left it on me for the most part.

Advice

Make the fullest out of the experience, it may be hard but you'll meet great people that can help you in the long run.
