The opportunity to work with kids of all different ages in an immediate capacity was incredible and there were so many opportunities for leadership and growth.

What I wish was different

I wish the management would have communicated better with there staff.

Asking for help is extremely important and don't be afraid to ask for it or give it. Nobody is judging.

Senior Counselor

What I liked

I liked the welcoming atmosphere and overall drive to provide an enriching experience to children over the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more staff to ensure proper counselor to child ratios were comfortable at all times rather than sufficient.

Advice

I would recommend this job to people that are experienced with child care and have an interest in teaching.

Camp Coordinator

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to manage my own group of both campers and fellow employees in order to effectively work together and create a welcoming and exciting environment for the children. I also enjoyed the leadership role (promotion) that I was appointed due to my dedication to the South Mountain YMCA, including the two years I worked as a senior counselor.

What I wish was different

I wish that we as a group of child care workers could more effectively communicate with each other and learn to be more focused on problem prevention rather than only working on resolving issues that have already escalated.

Advice

I would advise anyone who plans on becoming a camp coordinator that there is no such thing as being over prepared, preparation is key and it can really reduce potential issues.

What I liked

I loved working with the kids. Coming back every summer is always a joy.

What I wish was different

I wish that the environment was a little better. In terms of people working together seamlessly.

Advice

The kids are top priority ALWAYS. It is an honor to have someone trust you with their children so when doing so, it is very important to do it right and carefully. Also, have fun with the kids. Just because I am much older than them doesn't mean we can't have a playful and fun relationship.
