South Carolina Department of Transportation

Communications Intern

May - August 2018 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

I liked learning about new software programs, like Adobe Photoshop to edit photo negatives. I also enjoyed traveling with the communications team to film various road construction projects going on throughout the state of South Carolina.

What I wish was different

I enjoyed everything about the internship and wish nothing would have been different.

Advice

Although a journalism major and my focus was on news, it was very important to remain optimistic about different variations of journalism and learn new things to apply to your skill list.

Assistant Geodectic Technician

May - August 2017 • Aiken, SC

What I liked

The internship provided experience in several areas regarding civil engineering. I liked the fact I wasn’t doing the same thing all summer; but instead getting a taste of several different fields, which helped me narrow down what I want to concentrate on after I graduate. I also really liked the people I worked with, they were all really helpful and courteous.

What I wish was different

The only thing I can really think of regards the job itself. Halfway through the summer the interns switched roles from Construction to Maintinence and we had to start getting up earlier and maintainence was more labor related while construction was more consulting and inspection related. I just happen to prefer the consulting side but it was still good to get experience on both sides.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can. A majority of the people that I worked for have been there for 20+ years and have seen a lot including the modernization regarding technology and equipment. Also, ask for extra hours. Specifically on the construction side, night inspections are required monthly and for the veterans that have been there for a while, pretty tedious. Being an intern allows you to take over some of these shifts to make some overtime money while also taking the weight off some of the other employees shoulders for the summer or whenever you’re interning.
