I had an amazing female mentor/boss who really empowered me and gave me a lot of control over my own project. I was able to design my own event that helped engaged guests and their children in a fun awareness event about the sea turtle population on the island as well as how to care of the island to respect the natural life that lives there.
What I wish was different
The transition process with HR was very difficult. they did not present most of the "intern information" until late into the summer and there were also a lot of housing and roommate complications that were not handled with respect or efficiently.
Advice
Take advantage of every shadow opportunity. If your interested just ask. I was able to shadow the sales and catering manager for a whole day and still get my hourly wage.
