Sompo International

Risk Control Intern

June - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I loved the people that I worked with and the skills that they helped develop while I was working. The company took us around to each of their insurance offerings and had luncheons with them to discuss the industry as a whole. I was also able to work on projects that helped me gain a better understanding of the insurance industry as a whole.

What I wish was different

We had a project at the end of the internship that got moved around a bit as the concept changed. Not really a big deal tbh as we managed to get it completed on time.

Advice

Look into the opportunities that you may have not heard of. I had an excellent experience with this company all summer and I had not heard of them at the career fair. Sometimes the lesser-known choice may be better.

Good work life balance. The internship program is carefully designed with excited group activities as well as professional development.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was the best summer internship for me so far.

Business Operations Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My managers and VP were awesome mentors. Having little to no knowledge on Insurance Industry - they taught me a lot and explained all the work assigned to me which made my work easier. My VP connected me to other resources/departments internally so I can explore as much as possible during my time there.

What I wish was different

Nothing - everything was as good as it could be.

Advice

Venture to other departments and shadow other indivisuals in the company rather than just sticking to your own - You'll know more people and learn a lot of the company.

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved that my manager really took the time to explain different important concepts to me which I then applied in my work. I also very much appreciated that they gave me independent projects to work on, while also being open answering any questions I may have had in the process. Overall, everyone was also so willing to help and made me feel like a part of the team.

Underwriting and Global Risk Intern

June - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

The people at Sompo International wanted the Interns to succeed and take confidence away from the Internship. I went in knowing very little on Insurance and by the end of the summer, I learned about all the areas in the Insurance Industry.

What I wish was different

Everything about the Internship was valuable in its own way. We worked on a summer long project and I wish we could have expanded more on it and had more time. Other than that, this Internship allowed me to grow and experience many different areas of the Industry.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions. Questions are the only thing that help you learn and grow.

Intern

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

About 25 other interns so it was a lot of fun! Weekly lunch and learns were a great opportunity to learn about the industry.

What I wish was different

The actuarial role I was in did not provide for much networking and interpersonal relations.

Advice

Everyone is friendly, meet as many people as possible, and stay in touch with HR!
