SoFlo SAT Tutoring

Standardized Test Tutor

October 2021 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

The company culture at SoFlo is really wonderful - you feel like part of the team from the very beginning, and there's frequent communication between tutors and company founder Adam/operations manager Christina. All the resources you need to make tutoring a positive experience are provided for you, and the job itself is flexible to accommodate school/work schedules. Adam's goal is for tutors to "be their own boss," and that initiative makes for a highly positive work experience.

What I wish was different

Because tutors schedule with their students on a weekly basis, conflicts and rescheduling can occur often. (This isn't a company issue so much as a human issue.)

Advice

Signing on with SoFlo is a safe bet - there's little danger of becoming overwhelmed by the workload or feeling unsupported by the company. With a genuine passion for helping high schoolers improve their test scores, you should be set for a positive experience.

What I liked

Staff is very friendly, approachable, competent, everything you'd want! Adam & Christina make it really enjoyable to work here, and it's easy to bring up & resolve any issues you might be experiencing as a tutor. All necessary tutoring resources are provided (practice tests, worksheet, etc.), and tutors receive fairly comprehensive training before working with students Additional opportunities to lead group classes, workshops/webinars, etc. are occasionally available to tutors Tutoring is an amazing experience--working with all kinds of different students and getting to know them, their assets, and their aspirations is so rewarding!

What I wish was different

Since everything is virtual, there aren't opportunities to connect with other tutors. I think I'd grow more as a tutor with an easily accessible way to learn from my peers and chat through issues, like a tutor forum or Discord server or something. Not sure if this is even possible, given the nature of one-off opportunities, but it'd be nice to be able to sign up for leading workshops and additional classes. Currently, tutors wait to be contacted individually regarding these opportunities, which makes it tough to do any of them if you keep a very busy schedule. Tutor training could focus even more on teaching strategies in addition to test content

Advice

Highly suggest setting up 15-minute phone calls with each new student you're assigned (rather than just going into test prep the first session completely cold). During mine, I ask the student more about themselves, their goals, their college plans, and what they do for fun. I also ask them when they plan on taking the test and give them a run-down of what to expect from our sessions. Just doing this has helped me connect with my students and help them avoid the awkwardness or discomfort they might otherwise feel when working with a new tutor whom they've never met!

Standardized Test Tutor

What I liked

Working as a standardized test tutor with SoFlo is such a rewarding and uncomplicated experience. Since I tutor remotely, I have full control of my schedule and communicate directly with my students and their parents. This makes for quick communication and the ability to work in my bed. Coordinating new students with the management team is an easy and pain-free process, with all contact happening through text and email. However, the best part of this job is being able to witness a student truly outperform themself after just a few sessions and lots of hard work- it makes up for the prep time I must put in.

What I wish was different

Sometimes working with parents and students through email and text can be challenging, but this is just a product of remote tutoring and no reflection on SoFlo as a whole.

Advice

Take the time to get to know your students, because the sessions are much more enjoyable when you can spend five minutes talking about their week and having a laugh rather than only talking about the SAT and ACT. This also goes a long way in how your students respond to your tutoring; getting to know them makes them more comfortable and more willing to do their homework!

What I liked

The atmosphere set up by SoFlo’s founder, Adam, sets the tone for a very welcoming, engaging, and fun experience. I loved interacting with every person in the company and knew that they wanted to set me up to be as successful of a tutor as possible.

What I wish was different

Connecting with high school students over text or email is a struggle and can lead to some problems with scheduling sessions.

Advice

Trust that the people in this company want to support you and feel free to ask as many questions as you need to feel like you can be successful because they actively were some of the most supportive people I have worked for.

Hiring Manager

What I liked

I currently lead hiring for SoFlo Tutors and could not speak more highly about the job. I don't personally tutor myself but can speak to the great pay ($25/hour) and unmatched remote flexibility that the tutors have which makes it quite literally the perfect job for a college student. The company also has a great culture built from 100+ high-performing and sociable tutors. I highly recommend anyone looking for a side hustle during their college experience or just anyone interested in tutoring to apply.

SAT Tutor

October 2020 - September 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

SoFlo SAT Tutoring is a great company that is run by exceptionally kind and hardworking people. Everyone I spoke to genuinely cared about helping students do their best on standardized testing and the focus was always centered on meeting students where they were at. SoFlo provides a solid training program to all new tutors and the full-time employees consistently check in with tutors to offer support. This was an amazing part-time job to have throughout my first year in college and it was an incredibly rewarding experience.

What I wish was different

Coordinating tutoring sessions through text and email with both students and parents could at times be challenging, but the families were generally very easy to work with. In addition, SoFlo offered great advice and resources to make scheduling and keeping in touch with students manageable.

Advice

I am so glad I applied to SoFlo during my freshman year at Georgetown. It was a phenomenal way to pass on the knowledge and experience I had in standardized testing to students just a few years younger than me. The skills you gain by tutoring SAT concepts (communication, organizational, teaching skills) will serve you throughout your whole personal and professional life, and it was an invaluable experience. I highly recommend working with SoFlo and I am so grateful for this opportunity!
