What I liked
There were many aspects that I thoroughly enjoyed about this experience. It was a great introduction to the journalism field, allowing me to expand my writing and grow my portfolio. I appreciated how I had creative freedom when it came to which organizations I covered and the angle of the story itself. The internship was also super flexible. Elisa was an amazing mentor and I learned a lot last summer!

There isn't anything that I wish would have been different about this internship.
Advice
One piece of advice is to conduct some research early in the summer about the non-profits you're interested in. Not only compiling a list of organizations you want to reach out to, but what events (both in-person and virtual) they have coming up that you could attend. The earlier you plan, the more article ideas you can develop!

What I liked
I greatly enjoyed my experience at Society Page. I liked that I got the opportunity to write stories about nonprofits in fields that interested me. I felt like I had a lot of agency as an intern and contributor to create stories that I was passionate about. I liked that I got opportunities to network with various community members and learn about inspiring work happening around me. Elisa Klein was an amazing editor and mentor. She gave me helpful advice on how to improve my journalism and digital marketing skills and was a constant source of support.
What I wish was different
There isn't much I would change about my experience at Society Page at all. Perhaps I would suggest adding more up to date partners to the Seattle Society Page tab so that they are easier for interns to find.
Advice
My biggest piece of advice would be to get ahead on work by reaching out to multiple organizations to interview at once. Sometimes it would take a week or two for a nonprofit to get back to me, so having multiple organizations to interview at the ready is useful so that I could upload an article a week.

What I liked
This was an internship that I am happy I did as Elisa (the founder of these sites) does everything she can to help other students with their work for Society Page and outside of it. I’ve learned a lot from her, and I now feel more confident with my published writing.
What I wish was different
I can’t think of anything that I would want differently from this internship.
Advice
It’s a good place to work for college credit, references, and having some published work for your portfolio. It is unpaid, but it’s worth it for the experience and advice. Especially during the pandemic as a remote position.
