Skilled Manufacturing, Inc.

Design Engineer Intern

May 2015 - January 2017 • Traverse City, MI

What I liked

Skilled is a small company and a great way to start your professional development. There was tons of opportunities to actually make an impact for the company and the industry. Being able to design subsystems of assembly lines that were putting real automotive parts into production was not only rewarding but very educational. I was able to develop my design skills from experienced designers and work on a variety of projects.

What I wish was different

Design work wasn't entirely technical, little analysis was needed for subsystems.

Advice

Take the time to work with all types of engineers (controls, electrical, project, design) because they all have something different to teach you. Spend time on the production floor talking to line workers, technicians and machinists, it is the only way you will find impactful solutions to the problems you are solving. Talking with machinists is the best way to ensure your designs are actually manufacturable and that your drawings are readable and complete.
