Signify (formerly Philips Lighting)

Electrical Engineering Co-Op - Fall 2022

September - December 2022 • Burlington, MA

What I liked

Very supportive learning environment. Manager and co-workers were really personable and made me feel like part of the team. After getting comfortable you can really get creative with the tools provided. This was a great opportunity for a student to see working life.

What I wish was different

The lab work was an outstanding gateway into real problem solving. While not expected, I was hoping for some field work.

Advice

Especially on this specific team, make a paper trail! Record everything.

HR Talent Acquisition Intern

June - December 2022 • Bridgewater, NJ

What I liked

At Signify, you receive the support needed to excel in your career. As an early HR career professional, I was able to learn and develop skills that are useful within the HR field and in other professions. I had mentors and managers who helped me see things differently and coached me to improve in everything I did. Also, the projects I worked on were significant and valuable to the business and my professional growth. Also, you can network with anyone at the company and ask for support; they would be happier to do so. Besides that, there were many events for interns to help them, such as preparing for interviews, perfecting their resumes, etc. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

Be yourself, be open, ask questions, and learn as much as you can.

Internal Communications Intern

May - July 2018 • Amsterdam, North Holland

What I liked

The people were nice, inclusive and had a good attitude, which made going there every day more fun.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more experience related to what I would want to do, which is advertising.

Advice

Definitely to make use of the alumni career network, especially if you are an international student. Through the network, I found my future manager who offered me the internship. Especially coming from a place with limited experience in the field I wanted an internship in, it is helpful to use BU's network to get opportunities or leads on other avenues to try.

Channel Marketing Co-Op

July - December 2018 • Somerset, NJ

What I liked

At Signify I really enjoyed my channel marketing co-op because I learned an extraordinary amount of how the lighting business works on the professional side. The Channel Marketing team is filled with great teachers and mentors who taught me very well how to do my job and during the process I learned a lot of new skills. In addition to my role, I got involved beyond the channel marketing team by initiating a diversity & inclusion group called L.I.T.! (Leaders In Training). I also got involved with SHE (a women's group). During my 6 months I had a great time hosting and participating in a Halloween costume contest, doubles ping pong tournament, holiday arts & crafts session, Movember mustache walkathon, and I even got to attend the annual office holiday party! Overall, I truly enjoyed my co-op and was able to network a lot and made great friends/mentors.

What I wish was different

In my past co-op at Johnson & Johnson I was given specific projects to work on throughout my 6 months and was even given the opportunity to present one of my big business priority strategic projects to the leadership team. It was amazing because I got to really practice my presenting skills and also show the team and the leaders what I had been working on throughout my time. Something that I wish could have been different at Signify, is having an opportunity to present on my projects in a more formal setting and get exposure to leaders and getting their advice/feedback on your project/presentation.

Advice

I would recommend joining at diversity & inclusion group such as L.I.T. or SHE when you join Signify! This is because you're then able to network with professionals beyond your team that you are interning with. It will expose you to the rest of the business and teach you a lot about how Signify works as a whole! Joining L.I.T. personally helped me network with a lot of different individuals and I even made great mentors throughout the process whom I know I will still keep in touch with. I would also recommend communicating with your manager often and letting her or him know when you are having difficulties with your work or need help prioritizing your projects/making sure you're able to work and complete everything. What I started doing is coming an hour early everyday to help prioritize my plans for that day so that I can write a to do list that sets my objectives and goals that I hope to accomplish.
