Shock City Studios

Intern

June 2024 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

The engineers and the environment. Everyone is really helpful and welcoming, and all amazing people to work with and learn from. No one is intimidating and everyone tries to make you feel comfortable and invited.

What I wish was different

I wish it was busier, but my internship is during a season where there aren't a lot of artists recording.

Advice

Always ask questions, always reach out, always find something to do and something to try out. There is always something to learn from while you're at a studio, as long as you push yourself to do it.

What I liked

Everyone was so kind and open to sharing their knowledge. Getting to sit in on real, paid sessions was eye opening and put everything I learned in school into perspective. Also, just getting to see the day-to-day ins and outs of what running a studio looks like.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

It's something that can't be controlled but expect more downtime than you think. Come prepared with your own projects, utilize the open studios when you can, as much as you can.

Studio Intern

January 2022 • Saint Louis, MO

What I liked

Shock City was a very professional environment, but also very friendly and like one big family. Working up here starts to feel like a second home. It was an absolute pleasure being able to learn from incredibly talented and hardworking audio engineers in this field. We were constantly challenged to learn new things and do what we could to improve the overall studio experience. We also got hands-on work with editing podcasts and some songs to start to get our foot in the door for employment.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to start taking sessions a little bit earlier but there's really nothing else that I could say I wish was different. Everyone was very understanding and laid back throughout the entire semester.

Advice

TAKE INITIATIVE. If you want to be useful to this Recording studio, do everything you are required to without being asked. Once you've completed what needs to be done, start doing things to improve the Studio overall, by doing things like making repairs, suggesting certain improvements, ask questions, and provide top tier hospitality to the clientele.
