I loved working in the heart of our government and seeing history unfold in front of me. I enjoyed growing my network talking to various politicians and staff members as well as learning more about how the government functions from the inside.
What I wish was different
I wish COVID wasn't still burdening us so that I could give guests tour of the Capitol like I was expected to do initially. Unfortunately, the Capitol was closed to all guests.
Advice
Take advantage of every opportunity you are given. Network with staff members, volunteer to complete odd jobs, pick up extra work where you can.

Intern
February - August 2018 • Columbia, SC
What I liked
I loved learning what the Senator’s office and staff does behind the scenes, especially the constituent work.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more face time with the Senator, as I only met him once.
Advice
It’s not a high profile job, and it’s not glamourous like you might would hope, but it definitely provides hands on experience behind the scenes with constituent relationships.

Political Researcher
May - August 2019 • Columbia, SC
What I liked
I got to meet a lot of important political figures, including Senator Tim Scott and Governor McMaster. You are also able to transfer to any office you like, even in D.C.! I met so many amazing people and made great connections. I also got to do a lot of research for events funded by the congressman and work directly with constituents!
What I wish was different
I wish there had been more interns! We were lacking a bit this summer and it would be a greater and more fun experience if there was more help!
Advice
It is important to be confident and truthful when talking on the phone with people. Even if they ask something you might not know, you have all of the help and resources available around you! Just remain calm and be friendly and you will do great! It is OK to tell people you do not know or you are not sure about something and that you will take a moment to look up the correct information or ask one of your supervisors.

Received experience in the political world and learned to handle pressure when dealing with the public.
What I wish was different
I wish I was allowed to work 5 days a week as opposed to 2 days a week.
Advice
If you plan on pursuing any career that requires you to deal with the public, I would recommend working a job like this before you make your final decision.

Congressional Intern
May - June 2019 • Washington, DC
What I liked
I liked being able to assist staffers with research, give tours to constituents, and attend briefings/hearings. I absolutely loved working for Senator Scott and his staff.
What I wish was different
I wish I had lived closer to work and friends so I didn't have such a long commute for either. Also, I wish I had known that I could go to any of the meet and greats some of the Senator's had each week.
Advice
Take every opportunity they offer you. You'll be extremely busy but it is so worth it.
