Get a lot of sleep and have backup activities planned. Kiddos take a lot of your energy and many times they get bored of the activity in a short amount of time.

Metallurgy

April 2019 • Bethlehem, PA

What I liked

This was for a joint presentation with my fiancee, a PhD student at John's Hopkins: "An Experimental Approach to Ancient Egyptian Metalworking." It was an Excellent opportunity to explore my personal interest in ancient metallurgy by putting together a presentation for the American Research Center in Egypt DC Chapter meeting. I enjoyed the chance to work with my fiancee, who is also interested in metal casting technology, to recreate an ancient Egyptian sistrum, a musical instrument, in bronze. We sourced material and after countless hours of research and preparation enlisted the help of my grandfather, Bill, who worked in the R&D department at Bethlehem steel. Together, we cast several bronze sistrum handles to effectively recreate this instrument.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more time to research, create, and prepare our joint presentation. I also wish we had more resources available to do more castings.

Advice

Take advantage of any opportunity to dig deeper into your own research interests, you never know who else is also Interested in them or what doors it may open for you.

Founder/CEO

March 2017 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

As an individual who is self motivated and enjoys freedom in what I do being able to work for myself was an experience that not many people my age get to have. I would work some weeks for over 100 hours and others would not work more than 10 hours. Having the freedom to schedule and have my results be direct results of my work was a rewarding experience.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would encourage anyone who has a dream or a passion to find a way to fulfill that, and if possible monetize it. Being able to enjoy what you do for work especially at a time where you can have that freedom with limited risk is something many people look over and down the road wish they had pursued.

Film Producer

January 2012 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I get to choose my own hours, work late at night, and I am not worried about other office complications.

What I wish was different

I wish I could earn enough to counter the situation of not having benefits like a employee job.

Advice

Are you motivated? Can you work outside the hours of 9-5? Do you have management skills. If you have any of those, maybe consider owning your own business. It's a lot of hard work, but its totally worth it in the end!
