Sea Turtles 911

Research Assistant

June - July 2021 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I liked being a lead of the program and getting to see sea turtles

What I wish was different

This internship was very unorganized and I ended up having to build the whole schedule for my team when we were supposed to be given a schedule. We were also told that we would be provided transportation but instead all we got was a bus pass. It took us 2.5 hours to get to and from work each day. We also did not work under supervision even though we were promised we would be working under experienced professionals. They also failed to mention the $5,500 program fee until the end of the interview that was supposed to cover lodging, food at excursions, and activities. I was fed a total of 3 times the entire internship. This fee also did not include flights to and from the island.

Advice

Do not participate in the internship!

Marketing and Communications Intern

June - August 2020 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

Overall it was a great internship with lots of opportunities. Management allowed me to work on what I thought was interesting and would be most beneficial for my career. They helped in anyway they could and wanted to help further my career. It was a fun experience living in Hawaii with the other interns and learning about Sea Turtle Conservation.

What I wish was different

I would have liked a little more guidance on the assignments and my tasks. At times the internship was a little unorganized.

Advice

Be prepared to be self-motivated on your assignments.

Research Assistant Intern

November 2019 - January 2020 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I enjoyed the professional and personal growth opportunities during this internship. I really liked networking with people who are in my future career industry as this has allowed me to connect with new mentors to help guide me after graduation. I was able to work with experts to design and implement my own creative research project, which I am in the process of publishing in a peer reviewed journal now. I also enjoyed leadership experience here as I got the opportunity to work with the local community by leading a team of volunteers to do beach cleanup and other events to promote environmental conservation. Overall, the time here was super positive, amazing, definitely a life-changing experience for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been more self-initiative to start a lot of the readings prior to the beginning of the internship to lighten some of the workload during the program. In the future, I would reach out to the organization before the start of the program to ask for any papers, literature reviews, etc.

Advice

Before starting the program, I spent a lot of time trying to plan logistics, such as finding a place to stay on my own, but it was really difficult as I was not there physically. My advice would be to save time by asking the organization to help find lodging for this because they are locals and would know better.
