Sea Turtle Camp

Marine Educator

May - August 2022 • North Topsail Beach, NC

What I liked

I loved how much I was able to learn & teach others about marine science; I enjoyed the camp location, right on N Topsail Beach! I liked my coworkers, they hired a really strong staff for the summer of 2022.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more organization at some points during the job experience.

Advice

You must enjoy working with kids for this role, and must be okay with an around the clock kind of summer. This is not a 9 to 5 job, its more of a summer role.

Costa Rica Trip Leader

July 2016 - August 2017 • Alajuela, Alajuela

What I liked

Going to Costa Rica with a group of teens was a really wonderful experience. Sea Turtle Camp pays for all your expenses, including flights, so you have the opportunity to experience this beautiful country alongside a small group of teens, including ziplining, white water rafting, working directly with sea turtles, cooking with a local family, and more! It was also a great experience to support the personal growth of these teens, who were often away from their families in a foreign country for the first time. I grew a lot in supporting them through this experience.

What I wish was different

Because the camp is based in North Carolina and this trip is in Costa Rica, there is definitely not much support from the camp leadership. They set up the logistics of the trip, but if anything goes wrong logistically or interpersonally it is up to you and your co-leader to remedy the situation. I grew from navigating these challenges, and gained more self-confidence. However, I ultimately would have benefitted from knowing there was a bit more support when things went awry.

Advice

Connect with your co-lead in advance if possible! You are really each others' main supports throughout the trip, so I recommend investing in a positive relationship early with this person! It will make your time much more fun!

Marine Educator

May - August 2018 • N Topsail Beach, NC

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to learn more about the marine life I love while sharing my previous knowledge with excited and curious campers. I also loved working hands-on with sea turtles and feeling like I was making a difference.

What I wish was different

I wish our bosses would have been more involved, I felt like there was a constant disconnect.

Advice

Make sure you know what you are getting into, especially as a camp counselor. It is a 24/7 job that requires endurance physically and mentally.
