SCOUT Marketing

Summer Associate

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The internship was immersive and hands-on. Everyone in the office was extremely friendly and supportive (even the clients); you can tell they really want to help you learn. It was a great opportunity to be exposed to the health care industry and agency life. I was given constructive feedback on my work performance by my supervisors half way through the program. It was beneficial to identify what I was exceeding in and what I needed to actively work towards, which I've taken with me even after the internship.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be proactive. There's a lot of moving pieces, and it can be overwhelming in the beginning. The internship is what you make of it. If you're interested in a specific department or aspect of the industry, don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions and meet with people in the office who you think could offer their perspective.

What I liked

I really liked the hands-on experience I was able to be a part of at SCOUT. Every day I was included in client meetings and team meetings to discuss our goals and objectives for the week. I did not know much about the pharmaceutical industry but my team was super helpful at always answering my questions and explaining terminology. Usually, my day to day consisted of starting the morning with a client call to go over what campaigns we have in place and their current status. After about an hour half of the meetings I would often transfer over client feedback into our work files so that our creative team could see what changes the client would like to make.

What I wish was different

I do wish I had been able to do more work within the creative team to experience what a creative's day to day looks like in the agency world.

What I liked

I very much enjoyed interning at SCOUT. My team was very welcoming and made sure to include me in all meetings and address any questions I had. I had little knowledge of the Pharma industry, but the internship program heads made a helpful document with terminology and technology information. I was able to gain hands on experience by reviewing copy and art for some of the ads the agency was developing at the time, and I even got to lead a project kickoff. The internship was a great way to learn more about the workings of an ad agency.

What I wish was different

We had some educational programming events, but I would have appreciated a few more meetings/ lunch and learns with other employees.

Account Services Intern

June - July 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The location was great and the art department seemed cool. Good exposure to pharma advertising culture.

What I wish was different

There wasn't any structure to the internship: they didn't know what to do with the interns. No feedback given and not many opportunities. They also delayed paying my salary for three months instead of paying bi-weekly as promised.

Advice

I would only recommend it if you are interested in pharma advertising.
