Saturday Robotics

Mechanical Engineering Co-op

June 2023 • Watertown, MA

What I liked

People make or break a job, and the people here definitely made it! At Saturday, even just being a co-op student, I felt like a real engineer with my opinions and ideas treated the same as anyone. The mechanical engineering team is very welcoming, inclusive, and diverse in people, perspectives, and ideas. (Along with being some of the smartest people I've met!) I like that I was given the opportunity to lead a project that was my own, as if I were a full-time engineer at the company. I also had a mentor that I could turn to if I needed help, and they helped me grow engineering skills, identifying my weaknesses, and working on them in meaningful ways. I like how I am expected to be learning! The main trait that they wanted to help me on, identified from the interview, was connecting the academic material I learned in classes, and how to apply it to design and engineering in the real world, and I have been able develop that trait confidently here. (Also to add, there was a subsidized commuter rail pass that was very nice!)

What I wish was different

Compared to my past experiences, I have no critical comments about Saturday and their co-op program. It was obvious that their co-op program is still being refined, but at the level it is now, it feels well thought out and structured to give students the engineering experience they can expect.

Advice

My advice is that if you want a chance to prove your autonomy, and build something real, then this co-op is for you. If you struggle to be autonomous in your work, and would rather be managed in a more structured way, then this isn't for you. If you want to develop that though, than you will definitely be given the chance. I would go into this experience with the passion that is shown in everyone else that works here. Everyone here is working toward a goal, being a startup, and you need that same drive and passion to meet what is expected here. For me, robotics is such a passion that the work at Saturday became as exciting as a personal project and if you share that same excitement, I'd sit down and write a cover letter for this co-op.
