Math Tutor

June - August 2021 • Santa Monica, CA

What I liked

The thing I loved about working in the Math Lab was the family atmosphere we had. The tutors really enjoyed their jobs and I learned so much watching them tutor and applied that knowledge to the students that I tutored in Statistics. It was a pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of students that felt they were stuck on any given topic and realized that with proper guidance, it was not that hard at all. I was told many times by students, that they were about to drop the class, but I gave them hope. It was a great feeling to see that I was a reason that stopped students from quitting.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish would have been different is that I wished Santa Monica College and Cal State LA had a contractual relationship that would have allowed me to still work there while being a student at Cal State LA.

Advice

Patience. Not all students learn the way you do. We have all encountered obstacles in life and in class that may affect our confidence, and this also applies to students we are trying to assist. We have to empathize with a student's situation, build confidence in the student, and emphasize on not quitting. In other words, the distance to the light at the end of the tunnel is shorter than they think. Have the student believe that you will not let them fail. Failing is not an option.

Greeter

June - August 2019 • Santa Monica, CA

What I liked

I liked helping and guiding new students at my community college. I was able to give back to an institution that did so much for me while putting myself out of my comfort zone. Volunteering also allowed me to make new friends and strengthen past relationships.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

I would suggest making sure one eats and drinks enough so that there is enough energy to be "on" all day. Being a campus greeter is fun and rewarding yet exhausting emotionally and physically. Also, make sure to build trust in your relationships so you have someone to fall back on.
