Sales Associate/ Intern
May - August 2019 • Miramar Beach, FL
What I liked
Visual Merchandising experience and freedom to select my internship project
What I wish was different
I wished the interns had more industry related learning experiences while there. Most of our time was spent working as seasonal sales associates in the retail stores
Advice
Study the company’s dynamic before accepting and negotiate pay increase if you have adequate experience before starting. All of the interns, myself included, had plenty of retail experience going into the internship. While we were earning course credit, our pay was less than the high-school aged seasonal sales associates, who lived at home with their parents for the summer. The interns had to pay for summer tuition, housing, and other living expenses while interning. This would have been acceptable if the interns had not been doing more work than the seasonal employees. All of our projects involved improving sales in some regard in order to make the company more money. We worked full time and when we were off the clock, only then was there time to work on our internship projects. There was some inequality in tasks and we were slightly mislead about what our internship would actually entail. Overall I had a decent experience, but if I wanted a summer job I could have done so making more money while living at home and cutting expenses.

Accounting Intern
May - August 2018 • Destin, FL
What I liked
I really enjoyed the learning process and getting to be part of everyday business. There is job training involved but also a lot of learning on the way and teaching yourself. I like being able to apply what I learned in the class room to the real world.
What I wish was different
I would have liked to have been exposed to more challenging work and have more responsibilities.
Advice
I believe the most important part of internships and jobs in the business world is your ability to communicate and build relationships. In college you do not even touch the surface on how to do this in the real world. I think every student looking for an internship needs to work on communication skills and boost their confidence when asking questions to managers or coworkers.
