San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance

Guest Ambassador

May - July 2022 • Escondido, CA

What I liked

It was a great setting getting to be around animals every day, and sometimes getting to interact with them! If you like learning about animals and sharing with others who are interested, it's a great job. All of the coworkers in this position and other similar jobs were also very friendly.

What I wish was different

The weather was miserably hot some days, which isn't able to be changed. They were mostly very accommodating, offering breaks and providing ice water, but some areas could use more shade.

Advice

You will have to be able to handle crowds, children, and some unhappy adults and be able to talk to guests comfortably

Summer Fellow

May - August 2019 • Escondido, CA

What I liked

I enjoy working with the Community Engagement team who are the most passionate and helpful guides in my research project. My research is also very interesting as I get to travel to Hanoi, Vietnam - my home country- to conduct interviews with over 30 people about consumption of bear bile. This experience is so enriching as it helps me understand more about the importance of social science research in creating conservation programs to tackle human-wildlife conflicts especially in the South East Asia regions. I have the chance to explore more possible paths I can take as an aspiring young environmental activist, helping the environment as well as local communities in many ways.

What I wish was different

nothing really, I enjoy all three months of my internship and will continue my research this winter! I find a new career path that I'm deeply interested in.

Advice

Find an internship that encompasses all of your interests and passions.

Merchandise Sales Clerk

May - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I love how I got the opportunity to learn two sides of sales. I learned how to sale food and merchandise. I got to use my personality and my smile to increase sales. All I had to do was smile and ask them if they wanted something else.

What I wish was different

I wish other workers would have had the same approach that I had. Customer service should always be approached with a smile. The employee needs to make it as real of a smile as possible because sometimes it is hard to create a smile.

Advice

Do everything you do with a smile on your face. Care about each customer that you have the opportunity to talk with and try to make their day the best that it can be.
