I loved participating in surgeries, and they would let me scrub in for certain specialty surgeries which gave me a wealth of experience. I also was blessed to work and communicate on a daily basis with an array of veterinarians who guided me along my application process into veterinary school.
What I wish was different
I wish that the hours were more flexible but it really taught me a discipline of waking up at 6:00am and I do appreciate learning to be a more competent adult.
Advice
Ask a lot of questions and do not be afraid to talk about your aspirations and ask other people about the paths they took to get them to where they are now.
