San Antonio Zoo

Volunteer intern

June 2019 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

The people I was working with were very friendly, and I loved being able to get up close to some really cool lizards and salamanders.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to go on more field work expeditions because I was mainly just taking care of the animals within the building.

Advice

During the application process, at least as a volunteer, it took a really long time for them to get back to me when I asked for updates and to tell me whether I was accepted for the job or not. So be aware that you might be waiting a while to hear back when you apply.

Zookeeper Intern

May - July 2018 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I loved the ability to be able to help and assist the keepers with their everyday work. They tried to give us as much hands on experience as they could and allow us to learn and fulfill new tasks each day. I was able to help in various locations in my department depending on the need. I enjoyed the experience and loved feeling so welcome and appreciated.

Advice

Try your best. These keepers work hard every day to provide a quality life for the animals and enjoy their job every second. It is hard work, but knowing that you are helping the keepers take care of the animals as much as you can is very rewarding. Just work hard and be determined.
