What I liked

Most employees I've had the chance to speak to have told me how much they enjoy working here. They mention how the company & management takes such good care of them, so they are inclined to care about their own work and the company's wellbeing. Everyone is very friendly, and senior staff are accessible. They encourage their employees to speak with them about any feedback, discrepancies, etc. they may have. It's not uncommon for directors, managers and supervisors to be in touch with their reportees everyday at lunch, or simply walking past asking how they are. There's definitely a sense of community here.

What I wish was different

Maybe for pay to be a bit higher, but there are so many benefits that interns are privy to here compared to how they're treated at other companies, so I can't complain.

Advice

Be yourself. I would argue that based on my observations, plenty of the managers hire on the basis of seeing if a candidate is a good fit with the company culture at SRP. They hire people based on their authenticity and personality in addition to their experience.

Engineering Intern

What I liked

I like the experience gained here. I have been able to see what being an engineer is actually like day to day.

What I wish was different

Nothing really, maybe if the location was closer to my house.

Advice

I recommend starting early with applying to internships, and always writing a cover letter. This helps you stand out.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved all the different projects that I got to work on. The people were AMAZING! It was close to home. I get to see the application of what I learn in my classes.

What I wish was different

That it was longer.

Advice

Ask questions, get out of your comfort zone. If there is a project you are interested in or a meeting you are interested in. Ask to attend. The people there loved when me and the other intern asked questions.

I loved the people and the different projects I got to work on. Very hands on and very informative.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone, ask questions, ask to be a part of meetings. Explore. You get to know the plant better and form better relationships with people. Great way to expand your network.

What I liked

I really enjoy the community that is fellow employees and the culture of "We are a family here" approach in at SRP. I would say that 99% of the people that I have been in contact with at SRP have been, welcoming, helpful, and supportive for a new intern. I know they welcome everyone with a supportive approach and will help you when you need it.

What I wish was different

I do not have any wish of something to be different other than maybe getting holiday pay. But, in reality that is not really a set back considering you get paid and get sick pay and 401K just while being an intern. SRP really invests in their interns and many people I have met at SRP, were interns when they began at SRP.

Advice

I would recommend that a person come into this internship with a serious consideration of wanting to have a career at SRP. There are so many opportunities and you can move up to a full-time position usually within 6 months to a year.

Electrical Design Intern

What I liked

As an Intern with Substation Design I am treated like any other full time designer. I am assigned design projects and am able to manage them from start to finish. I felt like I was able to be productive and make significant contributions.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to spend more time doing electrical engineering related items instead of dealing with project management and communication related issues.

Advice

One thing I learned is to always ask questions of your colleagues. Especially at SRP where many of the engineers there have been there for a long time. They have a lot of experience that has proven very helpful to me in my role.
