Rowan University's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

Undergraduate REU fellow

May - August 2019 • Glassboro, NJ

What I liked

The people were fantastic and the labs are really nice. The program coordinators have put together a really great program even though it started in 2018.

What I wish was different

Because the program is only 10 weeks, it would have been nice to be able to do some of the article reading beforehand. I also wish my PI had given me a project instead of having me come up with one.

Advice

Apply! It was an amazing experience and I met some of my best friends. Glassboro is kind of in the middle of nowhere but people will have cars for grocery shopping or just going on adventures!

Research Volunteer

July 2014 • Mantua Township, NJ

What I liked

Research in a field I am passionate about -- paleontology -- right in my metaphorical backyard.

What I wish was different

Being able to spend more time volunteering.

Advice

Be ready to get dirty -- paleontology isn't clean.

Summer Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2019 • Stratford, NJ

What I liked

The hands-on experience, problem-solving, and connections I gained with professors and students.

What I wish was different

I wish my commute was shorter so I did not spend as much money on gas.

Advice

Ask your friends and professors for opportunities they know about. They might have connections and knowledge about experience for undergraduates you don't. Having someone vouch for you goes a long way! At the same time, do not be afraid to be a 'go-getter' and create opportunities for yourself!
