Rogers Behavioral Health

Psychology Research Assistant

June 2020 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I liked that this position entailed independence and gave me flexibility in my schedule. I additionally appreciated the fact that my work contributed to the larger psychology community and I learned a lot from my research. I am very honored and thankful to have had the opportunity to serve as a research intern at Rogers Behavioral Health.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more interaction with my supervisor and colleagues, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was impossible. I am happy that Rogers Behavioral Health prioritized safety during this time, but once the pandemic is over, in-person interaction would be beneficial for future interns.

Advice

I would advise others pursuing this position or similar roles to space out your work and be bold. Research can take up a lot of time and metal energy, so planning ahead about when you are going to work and taking breaks are important. On another note, being bold can involve reaching out and introducing yourself to someone in a high-level position, or asking questions, or taking on challenges in stride, or acting confident, even if you have not fully internalized this confidence yet. Pushing yourself to be brave and step out of your comfort zone is of utmost importance, especially if you are a young person entering the workforce like I am.

Residential Counselor

What I liked

Working at Rogers has provided me with experience with a wide variety of conditions - OCD, eating disorders, mood disorders, substance use disorders, schizophrenia, PTSD, somatic disorders, dissociative disorders, personality disorders, etc. I truly value the time I've spent with Rogers, and wholeheartedly recommend working here for people interested in mental health; having the opportunity to float to different units is a fantastic opportunity if you're passionate about mental health but are unsure about which focus you would like to have.
