I really enjoy the people here, they're all so friendly and kind! The work isn't too complicated and I get to do a variety of things. It also helps to work with a diversity of people in different circumstances, every one of them has a problem that's important to them, and it's important that I take that seriously.
What I wish was different
Nothing! I had exactly the summer I wanted to, a good mix of work and travel.
Advice
You could have a dream position, but if the people aren't good to be around, it won't be a good time. Scanning and indexing isn't exactly what I love to do, but I do love the environment and the people. The job is also super flexible with hours, which really helps with my changing schedule.

Food Service Systems Assistant
May - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
A benefit of this job is most of the work is self sufficient if you enjoying working on tasks on your own. Additionally, the hours were flexible if you ever needed to adjust the time of a shift or leave early for an appointment.
What I wish was different
I wish that I could have gotten a more hands on experience learning about nutrition. Most of the work was sitting behind a computer entering information into a database which included little communication with others and I felt I did not expand my knowledge on nutrition.
Advice
I would recommend this position to others who are looking for a job that requires a lot of database work and entering information into a system. You do not communicate with others often, you can wear headphones all day and work at your own pace. If you are a self sufficient individual that wants to come into work, do what you have to do, then leave, this is the job for you.

Computer Systems Administrator
May - September 2019 • Henrietta, NY
What I liked
I was treated more like a co-worker than a student on co-op . The work environment was great
What I wish was different
I couldn't work than 40 hours per week, and it would have been beneficial to others if I could have.
Advice
It was a great learning opportunity for new technologies that I hadn't yet worked with. Not for someone looking to simply fulfill a co-op requirement.

Research Fellow
May - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I liked that the work environment was largely self-motivated and focused on collaboration between the peers in my cohort. It gave us the chance to create and work on a project that we were passionate about with minimal outside interference and an appropriate amount of support from our primary investigator which gave a good idea of what graduate school would look like/function like.
What I wish was different
I wish that the program had been a bit longer so that we had more time to flesh out our finished product and to meet with our primary investigator to make sure that the papers that we worked on got published.
Advice
One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to really put yourself out there and make sure that you are getting the most out of your experience. In environments like this, it is up to you to push yourself to truly feel like you came away with new skills -- but if you can do that, it will be a very fruitful experience!

Digital Marketing Intern
May 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I liked that I was given some room for creativity. My coworkers were very open to hearing my ideas. I felt like I was able to bring new ideas to the team without fear of them dismissing me simply because i was an intern. The environment was very nice.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more interns to work with some days. I was the only intern during the summer and having more friends would have made it more enjoyable.
Advice
I would advise anyone who is an intern to actually push themselves to try and contribute in meaningful ways asides from grunt work. You get out what you put in. If you go into an internship and only do the bare minimum then it won't be as much as of an experience than if you try to go beyond what you're required to do.

What I liked
I liked the environment and the hands on experience of working in my future potential field.
What I wish was different
I wish that the research had been longer so that we could see the end product. I was part of a much larger group doing one small part of a huge product.
Advice
If you are given the chance to do research as an incoming freshman, do it. You get lots of experience and meet lots of people.

Business Analyst
May - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I liked that I was in a small software development team, working with a group of web developers and designers and taking the leadership role. I was able to apply the knowledge that I learned in class to real-life at work. My communication skills have improved after this co-op and I learned quite a lot about project management.
What I wish was different
Throughout the internship, I along with my coworkers had developed many creative and new ideas. However, they couldn't be implemented due to some roadblocks that are out of our control. I wish that new interns' ideas would be valued more.
Advice
This was my first co-op. Don't be afraid to apply for different types of jobs. Be open to learning along the new journey, and you'll do great! The important part of being a business analyst and project manager is to communicate. If you have questions, don't be afraid of approaching other people and ask!

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowhip
May - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I enjoyed spending all of my time focusing on my research instead of having to split it between classes like usual. It was a great experience taking the project and making it my own, becoming experienced and knowledgeable in that area of research and doing the best I could with it.
What I wish was different
Looking back I wish there had been more interactions with my professor, but that is my fault for not reaching out more than our weekly meeting.
Advice
Always ask for help if you don't know what's going on. It's also good to read through any documents and research articles in the beginning, the middle, and the end of the program to make sure that you still know all the details and are familiar with the bigger picture of what you are doing.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
June 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I was treated as a collaborator rather than an assistant. I was thrown into the work and had to find a solution to solve the tasks I was given.
What I wish was different
Absolutely nothing, I had the best experience and ended up being the primary author on the final paper.
Advice
Build relationships with your professors and other faculty within your college. They are all extremely qualified individuals and want to help students succeed.
