What I liked

The team at RobertDouglas provided a highly supportive, productive, and educational summer internship experience. I was able to work directly with multiple levels, including senior leadership, and had excellent exposure to deals at very stages. It was great to apply my pre-existing real estate, finance, and excel knowledge to the role, and I found that my summer prepared me very well and actually gave me a headstart on my coursework for my senior year. The team was very fun, both inside and outside of the office, and I really enjoyed getting to know everyone on a more personal level.

What I wish was different

As is inherent in many similar industries, deal flow was relatively slow in the summer. It would have been interesting to experience the more fast-paced side to the job, but I was unable to do so due to the timing of my internship.

Advice

Brush up on Excel and basic real estate finance concepts before the internship, as it will enable you to be much more productive from Day 1. With that being said, the team is always more than happy to teach, advise, and support you where necessary!

What I liked

A very intimate environment with direct access to SVPs and Principals. No official training program so they have you working on live deals from your first day, which is a unique opportunity in this industry. All colleagues were supportive and kind from day 1!

What I wish was different

I would have loved a week-long training program to get a handle on responsibilities and industry knowledge before jumping in. I was still relatively new to the industry and most of my knowledge came from classes, so there were lots of terms and ideas that I wasn't familiar with off the bat. Also, they do not give return offers to interns. Period. This can be frustrating as peers will have received return offers while you will need to apply to other firms in the fall for full-time work.

Advice

Make sure you read up on the industry and are ready when you go into the internship/job. It will expedite your learning and make you more effective during the first few weeks of the work.
