What I liked

I really liked the stories I worked on. The editors did a great job handing out interesting assignments while also letting interns pitch story ideas. Being able to pitch ideas meant a lot to me since I felt like I could easily approach my editors with ideas. The editors were also super nice and made the experience extremely enjoyable.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to experience what it was like to go into the office for the internship. With Covid-19, it made sense for the internship to be remote, but being able to get into a real work environment would have been beneficial for seeing how a magazine office is run.

Advice

Be ready to write on a variety of topics! Some of the blogposts I wrote were in collaboration with Rhode Island Commerce, so one day I'd maybe write about hardware stores while another day I'd write about kayak rental shops. Some of the topics took me out of my comfort zone which I liked because I was able to expand my knowledge by writing on subjects that weren't all that familiar to me. Fact checking and researching are also important skills for the internship!

What I liked

I loved working alongside my three bosses; they were all editors with their own expertise, and each taught me something different.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have spent more time there, and written more stories. I wish I could have gotten to know the rest of the team better, and being paid would have been a plus, too.

Advice

Don't be afraid to take initiative. If there is a story you would like to write, ask about it. Creative-minded bosses love to hear fresh ideas.
