Student Worker
July 2019 • Providence, RI
What I liked
I like the work that I do in the Records Office. I learned a lot about the school and what goes on behind the scenes in the administrative end. The job is also flexible around my class schedule so I am able to work and not have to worry about it interfering with school.
What I wish was different
I wish there was an easier way for me to help students rather than always having to ask a full-time employee.
Advice
Go in with an open mind, and always be ready to do the work needed.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow
May - July 2019 • North Providence, RI
What I liked
A really good hands-on experience with STEM research, doing work that had clear cut outcomes and expectations. Learned a lot about experimental design and data analysis, as well as had the opportunity for professional development via different program-organized workshops. Practiced fundamentals of science communication by presenting research at the SURF conference by the end of the 10 weeks.
What I wish was different
I wish there were more opportunities for professional development and networking with the other SURF fellows. I enjoyed the company of my labmates, but I wanted to hear and keep up with the other research being done beyond just the final conference at the end of the 10 weeks. I also wish the career exploration portion delved deeper into non-academia jobs related to STEM fields.
Advice
Really apply yourself to the research! Even if it isn't directly applicable to what you want to study in the future, it's undeniably amazing and important experience and it imparts critical skills that will always come in handy down the line. Also, deeply consider who you want to be your mentor. This person can offer important advice and guide you beyond the summer, so keep in mind what the PI can teach you in addition to the research you want to conduct.
