Research Rhino

Web Development Intern

May - December 2021 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I really liked how I wasn't just making really small code smell changes and bug fixes. I definitely did make these kinds of changes, but I also got the opportunity to work on my own scripts. I also appreciated how much freedom I had, and how close I got to work with the founder. I think that that helped me learn a lot about professional programming without being a boring 9-5 office job.

What I wish was different

Obviously, being unpaid was not the best. I didn't work too many hours a week, so I was able to work a paid job at the same time without too much hassle, but it would have been nice to be paid.

Advice

This is a great opportunity if you like a little more freedom and can be self-motivated. My experience included a lot of slack messaging but not a ton of meetings, which I appreciated but some people might not like that.

Venture Capital Intern

April - August 2021 • Somerset, MA

What I liked

My experience at Research Rhino gave me the opportunity to obtain valuable real world experience as a Freshmen in college. Not only did this give me a competitive advantage over peers, but it provided me numerous skills and relevant experiences that I was able to talk about in future interviews. William offers mentorship and guidance (even after my time here has ended), but also has trust in the interns and allows us to work independently, providing insight and teaching moments based off our work. One of my favorite parts about this role is that it is not limited to one specific industry. During my time here, I gained knowledge and experience in venture capital, accounting (Excel), marketing, programming, and presentation skills (formatting Powerpoints that were seen by investors and top level management) to name a few. As I mentioned previously, having this experience on my resume has allowed me to get interviews and offers from companies that would otherwise not be possible coming from a non-target school. I highly recommend this to anyone that may be interested in obtaining an internship early in their professional career, one that will allow you to separate yourself from the pack.

What I wish was different

The role was unpaid which may not be desirable, but in a way the internship is like making an investment in oneself. For me it was certainly well worth it considering the opportunities that came from it. Interns can also work on their own time and even if they can only devote a couple of hours a week, there is still solid experience to be gained here.

Advice

You get out of it what you put in. This role offers a plethora of opportunities to gain meaningful experience and skills, but it is up to you to capitalize on these opportunities.
