Regal Rexnord Corporation

Engineering CO-OP

May - December 2022 • Tipp City, OH

What I liked

I was able to work on a bunch of projects during my time with Regal Rexnord. My boss gave me projects that challenged me in many different areas. I really like how much I felt valued here. The projects I had were important to the company and the mechanical engineering team. I had the opportunity to be one of the first people at the company to run a harmonic analysis on one of our motors. That project was a ton of fun because I was able to do it on my own without having anyone that knew exactly what to do. Overall, the environment, people, and projects I had were all great and created a great experience for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have known more about material science and properties. Material selection and the properties of different materials can be very important to creating and improving a motor. My work during the past two semesters has reinforced my interest in materials engineering. I plan on taking more classes in materials engineering to apply that knowledge to my work.

Advice

Speak up and be confident. If you enjoy your work and want to return to a company then just say something. It does not hurt to be open with your boss and your interest in returning or not. Also it is very important to ask questions. Having the confidence to ask a question is incredibly important and will really help you. I asked a ton of questions, and therefore, learned a lot through my two terms.

Engineering Co-op

January - May 2022 • Tipp City, OH

What I liked

What I liked about this experience is the amount of information I was able to learn in a few months. I was able to work as a design engineer to create and modify parts for electric motors and fans. This opportunity allowed me to acquire technical skills that are important in the field of engineering. These skills include improvement in Solidworks, FEA & CFD Analysis using Ansys software, dimensioning & tolerances, understanding BOMs, and using PDM tools. I was also able to get hands-on experience in the laboratory using wind tunnels and dynamometers on the 3D printed prototypes I would make and I was able to do data analysis based on the results of the tests. All of my coworkers were very supportive and I asked as many questions as I could.

What I wish was different

I only wish one thing were different. I wish the location was closer to where I live in Dayton. My internship was in Tipp City so every morning I would drive 30-35 minutes to get to work Monday-Friday. I had to take the highway so I often had to deal with traffic whether it was an accident, weather, or just rush hour traffic. The increase in driving also put mileage on my car and I had to fill up my gas tank more often. Eventually, I got used to it but I would prefer a more convenient location. I do think it was worth it though 100%

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share is to always ask questions. When I first started my co-op experience, I was hesitant to ask questions because I did not want to feel stupid. But as I began to ask more and more questions, I was able to soak in a lot of information and it helped me to understand concepts and the bigger picture. Based on my experience, my supervisor, technicians, and other co-ops were very supportive. They were always willing to help me if I had any questions or required additional information for a project.

Design Engineer I

January 2017 • Tipp City, OH

What I liked

I work on a small breakaway team called Tailwind working on motor/blower technology for residential/light commercial HVAC applications. The best part of this team atmosphere is that we are learning new things everyday. Being at the forefront of axial flux motor technology, our team is one of the few that get's to develop ground breaking technology that hasn't been seen in industry before. As a result, there is no best practice... we are the engineers that are laying the groundwork for generations to come. On any given day, I am developing ways to make our motor/blower systems quieter and more efficient. That's what makes my job so exciting.

What I wish was different

The hardest part of working on such an innovative team is being able to gain traction/market share in the industry. Early adopters use our product to differentiate and over time larger OEM's will follow suit once the technology is proven. We have a very reliable product that is just beginning to make that transition into becoming mainstream. As a result, sometimes it is hard to get things done in the manufacturing environment because we aren't the large money makers for Regal
