Red Light Management

Intern

August - December 2018 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

Red Light in Nashville has a great atmosphere. The office is cool and people are super nice. If you take the initiative you will make some great connections. There are people who work in all aspects of the business under Red Light whether that be their digital marketing, tour marketing, graphic design, or management of course. If you take the time to be open and meet people you can learn so much and make some great connections.

What I wish was different

There is a lot of downtime and the internship isn't that structured. This is kind of good and bad. Good in the fact that if you take the initiative you can work for whoever you want and learn from them. It's bad when times are slow and you're just sitting in front of computer screen for hours on end. All in all, it's what you make of it.

Advice

Take initiative! Get to know people! Most interns will just hide in the mailroom and not get to know anyone. As long as you're making your best effort you will do great at Red Light.

What I liked

Chill environment, got to work directly with the Creative Team, treated like an actual employee, flexible hours

What I wish was different

More structured events, such as trainings, talks from managers, meetings dedicated to teaching about programs

General Intern

January - May 2017 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

- got to work side by side with the artist managers on many different projects - they took time to allow you to get to know the different people within the office to find a manager you could get along well with - the office is very open and inviting to socialize and work together on projects - there are many after hours or offsite projects/experiences offered to you to help on any of the artists' events - they keep in touch with past interns to see what we are up to now and still offer us volunteer opportunities or job openings

What I wish was different

The only downside to this internship was that since there were so many of us (11 total interns), some days were slow with not many projects to complete.

Advice

Take advantage of the contacts you are able to make within the office and keep in touch afterwards. The people working there will be very helpful for future references or work.

Intern

May - August 2017 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I really liked the Red Light atmosphere. It's a serious place and everyone is passionate about their work, but the people themselves are so fun-loving and really supportive of interns and the internship program. No matter who you're working with, everyone will give you chances to help out and learn, and they love watching the interns learn as well. Interns are treated like part of the family, and you really get a great taste for the management side of the music business.

What I wish was different

This may just be part of the business, but you spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen, sitting down. While internships are criticized often for exploiting interns and forcing them to go out and about to run errands, I actually wish that I had more opportunities to move around and get out of the office. Some days, I would be sitting and looking at my computer all day. While it is just a part of the new digital aspect of the business, it got tedious at times.

Advice

Ask questions and take initiative! Help out whenever possible and if you're curious about something related to the business or you're just unclear on instructions, ask!
