Reach Mission Trips

Crew Leader On Youth Mission Trip

July 2019 • Newfane, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting to experience the leadership and guidence that come with being a crew leader on a mission trip. Every year prior I had been apart of a work crew, however, this year was my first time being an actual leader. There was a lot of dependance on me from the younger members and even those that that were older but less experienced with construction jobs. I also really enjoyed meeting and spending quite a few days with many different denominations, personalities, and age groups. It was an amazing ten days that were full of fulfilling and hard work.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had better prepared for the role of leader, however, I was under the impression that I was going to just be apart of a work crew for the sixth year in a row. It became very clear that I would be a leader once we got to the camp and I realized that I was one of the oldest girls attending the camp. I was in the limbo age group where I was too old to be a regular crew member, yet I was too young to be an actual leader. There was a meeting and afterwards I felt that I would be able to step up and take on the role of crew leader along with some other amazing older participants. Other than that, I always love my experience at any Reach Mission Trip.

Advice

I would highly recommend talking to someone who has attended a Reach Mission Trip before signing up. This is because they are experienced and are able to give specific details that will better prepare those that are interested. I will not lie, these mission trips are not for the faint of heart. It is hard labor, hot July weather, very emotionally challenging, and life changing.

What I liked

It was incredible to be able to work with many different people and learn to adapt to the situation at hand. The full-time staff is incredibly helpful and trusts you with a lot of responsibility.
