Advice

Talk to more people. It is a huge company with so many different networking experiences do not be afraid to pry information.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed how I was able to stat making a difference on Day 1. I was continually given tasks that not only dealt with the tools and techniques I have been learning in the classroom, but ones that made a great impact on the company's success. I was truly able to make a difference by working on real-world problems with interdepartmental project teams. Every person I encountered at my Co-Op was extremely helpful and I was able to walk away from this Co-Op with a wealth of knowledge that I otherwise wouldn't have had.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to work there for a few more months because I was not able to finish some larger projects that I was working on. This facility is located in Greene, NY, so the commute from Buffalo to Greene and back would not have worked out. Geographically speaking its quite a haul especially those who live in Buffalo, like myself.

Advice

I would say the most important piece of advice I can give (and this goes for any internship/Co-Op) is to not be afraid to speak up if you're confused or don't know something. The worst thing you can do when you're not sure how to do something is to guess or assume what you should be doing. No member of management is going to think you are ignorant for not knowing everything, they didn't inherently know all the answers either, they asked questions. As long as you ask, you will never have to worry if you're doing something right.

Electrical Engineer Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed the different areas where I worked. I got to take on projects in my department as well as other departments. I loved doing the hands on work with the forklifts

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing. I didn't enjoy the paper work and documentation as much as everything else, but it needs to be done and no matter the company I'll have to do it.

Advice

Ask for work and don't be afraid to ask outside of your department. Raymond wants employees who go after what they want and who enjoy what they do. They allow you to find your own work. If you enjoy the family type companies then Raymond is the place for you.

What I liked

The company is big in many aspects. The Greene plant manufactures a lot of the Raymond forklifts. What I liked about Raymond is that you work with many employees of different backgrounds; education, ethnic groups, etc. You'll be working on diverse projects with different teams.

What I wish was different

Advice

Communicate with people, diversify your work, and always be willing to learn. There is no limit to what you learn. At this company you'll be exposed to different Engineering projects, get a taste of everything.

Responsibility for meaningful individual projects, interesting tasks, wide range of work, working with intelligent and helpful co-workers

I spent a lot of time chasing down answers, jumping from person to person and digging through databases to find out the history behind a decision or various components

Advice

If you're bored on co-op, you're doing something wrong!! Don't be afraid to get involved with extra things at work, in your community, and possibly stay committed to clubs/responsibilities from RIT

All the different things I learned with my mentor and the hands on work for my individual projects.

What I wish was different

I finished my projects fast than expected so there was down time towards the end of the internship.

If you run out of tasks go and ask people if they need help with anything

What I liked

If you get housing within Greene, you can easily walk there every day. Also, the people in my department who I worked with were all great people.

What I wish was different

there were some periods of down time where I had nothing to do, either because I'd finished what I was working on or needed help with something.

Advice

Judy Taylor's house is the best place to live while on co-op there. Its right across the street from the grocery store and a very short walk from the office
