Raphael House of Portland

Prevention Education Intern/Volunteer

May - September 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I loved learning about various consent-culture resources & networks, making an introduction video with the other intern, and working with the department to curate wording for various outreach materials .

What I wish was different

I honestly wish I had more time to offer. Ultimately, it was a deeply gratifying and inspiring experience. I came away having learned so much about the organization as well as the individuals devoted to influencing our education system.

Advice

I think the most important part of any internship experience (next to fulfilling your expected responsibilities) is building relationships with the people you are learning from. Be open to learning through listening and observing. Know being a self starter will easily grant you recognition and appreciation. But ultimately admitting to when you need help / being graceful when receiving help and being unafraid to ask both professional & personal questions builds trust. And usually those experiences turn into lifelong connections leading to more opportunities down the road.
