Radio Flyer

Human Resources Intern

February 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

My internship at Radio Flyer allowed me to continuously develop my professional skills across all HR functions. As an intern I was given meaningful projects that had a direct impact on Radio Flyer's mission. Whether that be being responsible for full-cycle recruiting, talent management, hosting onsite engagement activities, or compliance training Radio Flyer's whole team was dedicated to exposing me to amazing opportunities. I truly felt recognized at Radio Flyer and thoroughly enjoyed my time spent onsite!

What I wish was different

I wish there was more inter-departmental collaboration between interns. I really enjoyed the opportunity to work with the Brand Communications interns the Intern Social and would have loved to work with more interns throughout the duration of my summer internship.

Advice

Working at Radio Flyer is a once in a lifetime experience. Working for a company that consistently adheres to their core values and mission allowed for an inclusive environment where I felt like I belonged, I wasn't just an intern. A piece of advice I have is to be open to feedforward (Radio Flyer's version of feedback). Being open to feedforward from my managers, colleagues, and even other interns allowed me to grow and make an impact on multiple HR initiatives.

Winter Sales Intern

December 2020 - March 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Although my internship was remote, Radio Flyer made me feel connected and welcomed from Day 1! I was able to join company meetings and meet Flyers in other departments to truly feel immersed in the fun company culture. Additionally, I enjoyed how meaningful my projects were and the ability to provide recommendations based on the results!

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to intern in the office, but with the COVID pandemic, I understand why that wasn't possible. Despite this, Radio Flyer made what could have been an isolating experience into a memorable and connected one.

Advice

Connect with others and ask questions! Everyone is extremely welcoming and is always open to support each other.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed the dynamic work environment, the opportunities to learn and grow, and that my work had a direct impact! I was fortunate enough to work in-person, and every coworker (Flyer) made me feel welcomed and included, no matter department or seniority. My various projects helped me sharpen my creative and professional skills as well as expand my knowledge on new topics. Every day was different but always fun!

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to shadow a Flyer from my own team to gain more insight on their projects and impact on the company.

Advice

Communication and collaboration are extremely important at Radio Flyer, whether it's giving/asking for feedback or confirming project details with your team. Don't be afraid to ask questions and share your creative ideas!

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I liked the positive work environment, the emphasis on culture. and the amount of responsibility that interns are given. Everyone truly wants to be here and wants to contribute as best as they possibly can. This doesn't stop with personal endeavors and goals; each person I interacted with was eager to share their knowledge and help me grow my technical and professional skill set.

I wish that I had more time with Radio Flyer! I learned so much and was a part of so many impactful projects.

Advice

Brand Ambassador

November 2020 - March 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The atmosphere within Radio Flyer company would have to be the main pro. Though I had a virtual internship, my coworkers (Flyers) were very welcoming. I felt connected and needed as soon as I joined the company. I received assistance from 5+ flyers throughout my training who were willing to guide me along the way. Getting a personal LinkedIn message from the CWO ( Chief Wagon Officer) welcoming me to the company made me feel like an essential part of the team. I learned a lot over my internship time that can be useful to me forever.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to see the Radio Flyer office to get that grasp of the company. I am aware of the conditions of COVID and understand why I was not able to come into the actual workplace.

Advice

There is a lot of student/employee lead work, meaning you have to be responsible enough to meet those deadlines and goals. Find ways to be creative and push the vision of Radio Flyer in everything you do.

Human Resource Intern

July - November 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed that the work was meaningful. From day one I was given projects that an HR generalist would work on. I also enjoyed that no two days looked the same and I was always busy with various projects that allowed me to expand my HR knowledge! My favorite part of the internship was how collaborative the work environment was and that I was able to participate and further develop my professional skills in training courses, called Wagon U.

What I wish was different

I was grateful my internship still took place this summer, however, due to COVID not as many Flyers (employees) were in the office. This was the only downfall, I did not get to experience the typical bustling Radio Flyer office environment.

Advice

If there is one piece of advice I would share it is to not be afraid to ask questions and be strategic with your communication. Radio Flyer has cultivated an environment of feedback in the form of both giving and receiving. After quickly learning this I learned that no question is ever too small!

Prototype Engineer

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Fantastic positive work environment and culture, doing all the right things by their community, their employees, and the local environment.

What I wish was different

Would have liked to have more opportunity to gain experience on the CNC machinery, and to have more opportunities to engage in creative design processes.

Advice

Collaboration and communication are key. The prototype shop is a high-demand area with a lot of projects going through, so learning to prioritize and time management are some of the most important skills to apply. Communicate back with the engineers and requestors who have brought projects as well, most people are very understanding and flexible about the need to prioritize, and they will work with you to maximize everyone's success. Chicago is an amazing city, definitely get out and explore the local area. Check out the Swing and Blues dance scenes, awesome people there.
