RA Consultants, LLC

Civil Engineering Co-op

May - August 2024 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

First of all, the company culture is extremely fulfilling and generous. Supervisors are very understanding of your life outside of work and you are mostly (at least in my experience) limited to 40 hours a week. The people working for RA make a difference too, all of whom were very welcoming. I really liked the willingness for RA to teach interns, giving them many opportunities to succeed, including CAD training, great task delegation, seminars, and constructive feedback. Specifically, regarding CAD, RA puts an emphasis on CAD/Civil 3D work that truly exceeded my expectations. If you are looking to get involved in crucial CAD work, while receiving proper, detailed training, I would highly recommend RA Consultants. Additionally, the field work I performed with RA was incredibly valuable. I was able to learn some surveying and GIS skills through field work exposure.

What I wish was different

During my co-op experience, I wish that I asked to get involved in a broader range of work. Whenever I did ask to get involved, RA was generally open to me doing so. There were times when I should have put myself out there but did not.

Advice

My most important piece of advice is to ask a lot of questions. Asking questions (and truly listening to the answer) about the projects is crucial for your understanding of them. Use what you know, and understand what you don't know in order to learn.
