Qkids

ESL Teacher

March 2019 • Hemet, CA

What I liked

I work from home and get to work with little kids, it is a very fun and rewarding job.

What I wish was different

Because the company is based in China, the hours are either super early in the morning or later evening into the night.

Advice

Teaching ESL online is a really fun and flexible job for college students, I would recommend knowing what hours you're willing to work so that you don't try to do the early hours and burn yourself out (which I did in the beginning). It's fun work but it is very draining due to the high energy needed to keep kids engaged.

Online English Teacher

June 2018 - September 2019 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I liked teaching online and at home. The program was easy to use, the kids were fun to teach and I got a lot of educational experience.

What I wish was different

The early hours were rough over time. I wish there were more hours later in the day but that’s a little rough when your students are in China.

Advice

Be energetic and get your TSOL certification online to speed upon the application process.

Online ESL Teacher

February 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

I love the flexibility of the job, the students, and the staff. I love teaching children ESL online from the comfort of my home.

What I wish was different

The pay is monthly, which is not so bad if you are good at budgeting. It would be nicer if the pay were biweekly like most jobs-but the money is transferred from international banking and that takes time (it would be ideally unrealistic to expect the money to be transferred and accepted in such a short time).

Advice

Every student is different. Each student has their own imagination and ways to creatively express themselves. As an online ESL teacher you are also exposed to many different cultural norms-it is amazing to learn more about the culture of the students I teach. It is such a fulfilling experience.

Teacher

June 2018 • Hillsdale, MI

What I liked

The scheduling is extremely flexible, the parents and the kids are usually awesome, and all the support staff is very helpful.

What I wish was different

There were a few communication issues that were rectified by switching messaging services and the time difference made for long gaps, but it wasn’t ever serious.

Advice

Be as animated as possible and truly enjoy every lesson—it makes it a better experience for both you and your students.

English Teacher

July 2018 • Hong Kong, Hong Kong

What I liked

Good pay, fun work, flexibility in how much I work

What I wish was different

That it didn't require working at four in the morning, and that the number of classes stayed high after the chinese school year started

Advice

It's worth doing if you have an interest in teaching overseas; even with only a few months of experience, it still bumped my salary in China up by several thousand Yuan a month.

It’s a fun job but you do have to have the right kind of personality for it and you can’t mind getting up early in the morning or having to stay up late at night.

ESL Instructor Intern

June - October 2018 • Mount Vernon, NY

What I liked

I liked the kids I got to work with and to learn about their lives and interests. But also to know I am helping a new generation of kids become bi or multilingual.

What I wish was different

The hours were early in the morning and late at night so I had to catch up on sleep every day in the afternoons.

Advice

Memorize the software and then just be prepared to work early and late in the day. The more classes you teach, the less preparing you’ll need to do as you go along.
