Associate Quality Engineer

What I liked

I felt like the work I did had a direct impact on the company. I was given projects and opportunities to work directly with engineers and production staff to implement changes on the production floor. I was given a lot of freedom to pursue projects I was assigned and find solutions on my own, while being guided and receiving feedback. The hours were flexible and worked around my classes during the school year, and the pay was great. During the COVID pandemic, I was furloughed for several weeks but wasn't laid off. I was able to resume my normal role and duties after only a few weeks.

What I wish was different

At times I felt I could use more direction. There were times when a project I was working on was stalled because I needed feedback or information from others in the office who were unavailable. I didn't know how to approach some of the problems I was given and could have used more direction to get started.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions and get a clear idea of what's expected of you and exactly what you are asked to do. You'll have a lot of freedom to pursue solutions in your own way, so spend time doing background research. You'll have a lot of contact with many departments around the company, so don't be wary of reaching out to coworkers to get answers to your questions. Take advantage of the employee store!

Quality Engineer Intern

What I liked

The real-life work experience. From the first day I was assigned a project and thrown onto the production floor to observe, ask questions, and gain insight. As a student who had only worked in a research lab, it was intimidating, but really boosted my confidence. I was pulled into projects that would come up in the week. I was assigned projects that were 100% my responsibility. There was a lot of independence, but also an amazing goal system to ensure I had things to do and was staying on track. My growth as an engineer has increase ten-fold through this internship.

What I wish was different

The independence was a huge adjustment in the beginning. I feel like it took me a longer time to get to know people, get to know the process, and feel comfortable with both of those to do the assigned task. Maybe a week to be introduced to the people you'll be working with a lot and going over the processes would be beneficial.

Advice

Be personable. I feel like a lot of my success has come from getting to know people, having those real conversation. It makes people a lot more willing to answer questions you might have, or help you out with something you are working on. Being flexible is another thing I have learned from this job. Something that is priority number one last week isn't guaranteed to be a priority the next week. The ability to balance and be flexible is extremely important.
