Intern

May 2023 • West Lafayette, IN

What I liked

My supervisor, the tasks assigned to me, and the opportunity to explore the rural sector of environmental science.

What I wish was different

I worked mostly alone and would have preferred to be in a space with other coworkers.

Advice

Communication with my supervisor was key and made the job experience much better.

Research Assistant

December 2022 • West Lafayette, IN

What I liked

Opportunity to work with Mixed Reality, something I’ve been interested in for a long time. As well as the opportunity to work with robots, which I’ve also been interested in for a long time.

What I wish was different

I wish our lab had swipe-in entry like it was supposed to (instead of having to ask someone with a key to open the door for me every time).

Advice

Set milestones. At times it can be easy to float away just learning new things, but setting milestones can keep you on track with the project at hand.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow

May - August 2022 • West Lafayette, IN

What I liked

I loved my lab environment and mentors. As a first time researcher, I felt so supported by my grad student and the PI of the lab I was working in. They were understanding and helpful and taught me so much about the subject.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been slightly more structure to the project, because I just had to kind of figure it out as I went. Although this is valuable experience as well, I think that there could have been more structure in my expectations.

Advice

Go for it: there's no point in not applying to a job. Reach out to your potential employer, make personal connections, and ALWAYS give it your best shot. I didn't think I would get this position but I reached out to the professor in an email saying I was interested in her research, and after talking to her and some current students I got the position.

Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • West Lafayette, IN

What I liked

I felt very at home in my research group. They allowed me to showcase my talent and trusted me as a self-starter.

What I wish was different

West Lafayette is a hard place to which to adjust. It’s very rural and the accommodations weren’t the best.

Advice

Focus on what you’re there to do, which is the research. Everything else is secondary. However, one important secondary aspect is recruitment for graduate studies. Make sure you make a good impression!
