What I liked

I was given a lot of projects that were important to the business and had a real, immediate, impact. Also, I was interacting with managers and directors regularly, which was nice. These people also made time for me when I asked for informational interviews, which gave me a lot of information and perspective to use in my early career

What I wish was different

I wish I had more visibility into my upcoming work. For most of the internship, I was working on high priority projects that came out of nowhere as far as I could see. If I had some information on what I'd be doing next, I might have been able to simplify my work, accomplish more at once, and generally be more efficient. Also, at the time, Proofpoint had a policy in place where work-study interns would be paid less, upwards of 40%, than the "normal" interns, even though they the would normally be there for much longer and would do the same work. Knowing that teammates and peers, that were newer and doing the same work, were being paid significantly more was very demotivating.

Advice

Work hard and efficiently early on so that they trust you with more significant and interesting tasks later on. This will not only give you more exposure and skill but will get you out of the more monotonous tasks as well.

What I liked

Extremely good team which had a massive impact on my learning experience. This may vary across the company, but Threat Systems has a few very good teams where you would learn a lot. Chiller out work environment and all is good as long as you get your work done effectively.

What I wish was different

Intern pay for SWE is less than industry average.

Advice

Your interviewer is most probably going to be from the team you're going to be working in. The interview is long and fairly stretched so take advantage of that and learn as much as you can about what you will be working on and the kind of role they have in store for you. It'll give you the luxury of knowing if you'll be a decent fit which can't be said about a lot of companies with a less transparent recruiting process.

Learn as much as you can from your managers and your coworkers, you'll learn industry standards, tools and management styles that you won't possibly learn from just studying in school!
