About Project Oceanology

Project Oceanology is a non-profit education and research facility dedicated to nurturing student and public interest and enthusiasm for marine sciences.

Project Oceanology’s mission since 1972 has been to nurture interest and inspire enthusiasm for science and for our planet’s marine environment from our waterfront facility in Groton, Connecticut. Project Oceanology is a year-round, marine science educational organization governed by local school districts and in collaboration with universities and other educational institutions.

Project Oceanology's vision is to be the center of excellence for inquiry, and place-based science and marine education serving the evolving needs of our global community.

“I appreciated how the organization was run. I liked the people who worked there. My role was clear to me but I also got the freedom to put my own passions into my job. I had one lesson a week to lead-teach. Even though I didn't have a background in marine science, I was encouraged to bring what I had to the table. I often would do some library research and then come up with a basic lesson. One example of a lesson where I intigrated my background in the arts: I did a coral reef presentation and then had the kids build their own "coral reefs" out of dried pasta, hot glue, and paint. It was a great success!”
