I really appreciated being a part of team meetings to see how the Data Science team worked together and how my research would contribute to their team projects. I also loved the people I worked with who went beyond being only people I worked with, but people who took the time to create a learning experience in areas I wasn't as skilled in such as writing code. Everyone was very welcoming and patient, which is great for a new intern.
What I wish was different
The goal of the project was laid out for me and thoroughly explained through meetings with extensive PowerPoints which was great. However, throughout the project, especially in the beginning, I wish I had a bit more direction to get started so that I could have avoided some organizational mistakes that ended up costing me extra time to go back to fix. This also includes having management, team leaders, and interns all on the same page with clear, defined, and specific objectives. At any rate, the independence to attack this project in the way that worked best for me, was an overall positive thing.
Advice
Get to know as many people as possible because you never know how they may be able to help you as an intern!
