Bioinformatics Intern

What I liked

Marrone gave me lots of opportunities to work with different types of bioinformatics data and grow my skills as a data scientist. They have a very positive company culture and I felt my supervisors cared about making the internship a valuable learning experience for me in addition to contributing to the company's goals.

What I wish was different

I can't think of anything I wish was different.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions during internships, including during the interview and on the job. Bringing a couple of questions to ask during an interview shows that you are thoughtful and motivated about the role. In addition, asking whenever you are uncertain about something on the job will help you do better work, and is important for growing your skills and getting the most out of your internship experience.

Chemistry Intern

What I liked

They were very flexible and accommodating towards students. They let us fake time off for midterms or exams. The other interns and scientists were friendly and patient in teaching me how to do different tasks around the lab.

What I wish was different

Interns were often staggered on different days to ensure someone would be in everyday, but I would have liked more time with the other interns. I also would have liked to know more about what our contributions did, or I guess the impact we had. I also would have liked a more consistent work flow. Some days we were swamped the entire time, other days there was little to nothing to do.

Advice

Be prepared to work ~15 hrs/week and make sure if you are ever uncertain about something to asks someone. Also don’t be shy about requesting time off for school.
