Precise Biometrics

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Potsdam, NY

What I liked

I was able to work with a St. Lawrence Professor while I was there which made it easier to transition into the "real world" of computer science. It was a small company so I was able to get to know everyone really well. I worked on bigger, more important projects that I probably wouldn't have been able to work on if I worked at a larger company. The headquarters of the company is in Sweden so we video-chatted with them a lot which was really cool. I learned more in 2 months through direct experience than I've learned during the 2 years of computer science classes that I've taken.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was in a city that was in a more central location. It was a bit lonely at times, especially because my coworkers were all a lot older than me.

Advice

It's okay to make mistakes and to ask questions. I was in over my head at times but everyone who I worked with was willing to help me and teach me. They really wanted me to learn and grow as a person and as a computer scientist. As an intern, I think it's important to find a place where you will be able to learn through the work that you are doing.
