Intern
June - August 2021 • Charlottesville, VA
What I liked
As a Facilitator at Power in Place, I found the experience to be incredibly enriching and fulfilling. One of the things that I liked the most was the opportunity to work with a team of people who were all deeply committed to the organization's mission and values. The culture of inclusivity and collaboration that Katrina Hajagos has instilled at Power in Place was palpable in every aspect of the organization, from the way we worked together on projects to the way we communicated with each other. I also appreciated the level of responsibility and trust that was placed in me as an intern - I was given the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects and was given the autonomy to take ownership of my work. Overall, interning at Power in Place was an incredibly rewarding experience that provided me with valuable skills, meaningful connections, and a deeper understanding of the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
What I wish was different
I think more bonding opportunities for the interns would be a great addition to the internship.
Advice
Katrina is extremely helpful, hardworking, and is always willing to learn more about interns' interests outside of the position. I would tell an incoming intern to take advantage of the opportunity and get to know her.

Poet & Martketing Intern

What I liked
I enjoyed Katrina Hajagos as the director she was very empathetic and kind. I also enjoyed my breakout group sessions and getting the chance to interview a judge.
What I wish was different
Honestly, I wish it had like a year-long program to continue to stay. As well as an easier way to pick out an activist or politician since it took a while for me but I am glad I did.
Advice
One piece of advice I would like to share about this experience is Never Give Up and Great Things Take Time!

Project Manager
June - August 2021 • Braintree, VT
What I liked
One of my favorite things about working for Power in Place was the ability to explore your own topics of interest. The founder of the organization, Katrina, was very open to listening to collaborators' ideas and suggestions for their long term and short term projects of the Summer.
What I wish was different
As enjoyable the freedom of the program was, I wish I had a little more guidance from the previous mangers of projects and more structure from the founder with the projects we had in hand. Sometimes our groups and co-managers would have very strong ideas to present, but there was slight trouble with the execution which we needed more guidance.

What I liked
I appreciated the flexibility of the internship! I had plenty of time to accomplish what I needed to around my own schedule, which was very helpful. I also enjoyed that the internship was student-run because it allowed me to connect with other students and make friendships!

Collaborator
June - August 2021 • Braintree, VT
What I liked
I liked the opportunity for networking with other college students and with elected officials and nonprofit organizers through elected official interviews and through the Speaker Series weekly guest presentations. I also appreciated that creative elements were woven into many aspects of the project, and that there was a lot of opportunity for collaborative design and writing.
What I wish was different
I wish that the internship had been more structured - weekly schedules were sent out very last-minute and there was no hierarchy of leadership. There was a lot of potential for important work to be done, but the virtual nature of it, as well as separating us into so many different groups, made it challenging for individual interns to build leadership skills and a strong work ethic.
Advice
You get out of it what you put into it. There are many opportunities for connection and creative output, but it requires discipline on your part, so students who take this position should be very self-motivated and organized.

Collaborator
June - August 2020 • Braintree, VT
What I liked
I love how much I was able to connect with the other collaborators on projects. Additionally, having our speaker series was so inspiring as collaborators were able to hear from all sorts of women involved in politics and their experiences.
What I wish was different
I wish that the internship had been a bit more organized. However, PiP was in a transitional phase, so considering that the organization went from two people to over 50 it was very well managed.
Advice
Don't be afraid to take initiative! It was so rewarding for me to present an idea and actually see it develop to some extent over the summer.

Intern
May - August 2020 • Philadelphia, PA
What I liked
This internship is very self-directed, so I had the opportunity to work on several different teams. I appreciated having the experience of applying to grants, writing blog posts, and interviewing politicians all within one summer internship.
What I wish was different
I interned with Power in Place the summer of 2020, so the job was completely virtual. There was not much that could have changed given the COVID-19 pandemic, but I think students would benefit from some in-person interaction once that is possible.
Advice
This internship is one of those experiences where you get what you give; I would recommend really dedicating yourself and investing time in this opportunity, as your experience will be significantly more fulfilling that way.

Finance Intern
May - September 2020 • New York City, NY
What I liked
Really able to make your own out of the internship and can learn a lot about different areas such as social media, marketing, government, finance, fundraising, and more. It was exciting to be a part of a cause that I was passionate about.
What I wish was different
It would have been nice to meet team members in person and have more interaction, but due to COVID and the remote nature of internship, that was hard to do.
