Pool Guards Inc.

Head Assistant Manager

May 2016 • Naperville, IL

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of being able to swap ships with people and having the opportunities to work in multiple locations. I liked the leadership opportunities I was given and the trust to run several different things completely on my own. It helped developed my ability to handle a lot of situations completely independently and communicate efficiently with a lot of people.

What I wish was different

I had a harassment situation and it wasn't dealt with as promptly as I felt necassary and the company allowed the person to resign because it was easier for them. I wish the lifeguard training was a bit stricter because the company expects you to train the guards for a lot of information. The stuff the guards don't know or choose to actively not guard while on duty is a bit scary sometimes; this is a hit or miss statement that just depends on your staff though.

Advice

Since there are a lot of 16 year old kids working at the pools, there tends to be a lot that quit if they get mad over anything or decide they want to hang out with friends more than the they said they could work. You have to go in with the mindset that there are gonna ridiculous things said to you but practice remaining collected, communicating effectively, and handling situations in a professional manner. This can be hard but necessary, especially if any of the guards do overlap as your friends.

What I liked

I got to pick my own hours depending on my personal schedule.

What I wish was different

Hire more people so incase there was an emergency, someone could take my shift without me having to worry about having to go in or not.

Advice

It's really fun to work here and I'm glad that I get to come back every summer.
