Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Brant Lake, NY

What I liked

I loved spending everyday of the summer outside and on the waterfront. I learned a lot from living with the girls and teaching them how to swim.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more mobility while at the camp. It's sort of in the middle of nowhere, and the nearest big town is thirty minutes away, and I didn't always have access to transportation when I wanted it.

Advice

I would want people to know that this job requires a lot of energy - you're working 24/7 because not only do you spend the day with the girls, but you live with them too. You have to really like kids and be willing to throw yourself into the deep end for this job.

Wilderness, Adventure, and Discovery Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Brant Lake, NY

What I liked

I loved being able to work directly with the age group of kids that I will be teaching in the future. I lived with them for seven weeks and got the chance to make sound connections with them, while teaching them about our environment and the outdoors. We were in the middle of the Adirondack Mountains too, so that was absolutely beautiful to be around!

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to take my girls on more hikes and valuable outdoor experiences to greater impact their learning.

Advice

One piece of advice would probably be to step out of your comfort zone. It was a huge deal for me to live in New York all summer away from my home, friends, and family. But it was a really great experience and I'm glad I took the opportunity to go!
