Plymouth Tube Company

Process Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Hopkinsville, KY

What I liked

There were multiple aspects of this internship I really enjoyed, but the two I appreciated most were the community of people at Plymouth and being kept busy with purposeful assignments. I can’t say enough good things about the employees I worked with. Everyone treated me with incredible kindness, were open to my questions, made me feel included in meetings and conversations, and left me constantly smiling. I feel the community of people one works with plays a huge part in shaping the experience of an intern, so I am appreciative Plymouth made me excited to come to work. Second, it is easy to picture the role of an intern as someone who makes coffee and completes mundane tasks that no one else desires to do. That was definitely not my experience. From the beginning, I was asked to assist in projects that were meaningful to the company and helped expose me to examples of engineering in the real world.

What I wish was different

This company and my supervisor truly organized a fantastic internship experience. My assignments were purposeful, provided me with a good balance between design work and hand-on tasks out in the plant, and taught me a lot about the industry environment. I really do not have any complaints or recommendations for improvements.

Advice

As this was my first internship, I really appreciated the opportunity to experience working in industry, seeing real world applications of engineering concepts and critical thinking skills, and sampling what it is like to hold a full-time job. Such exposure has increased my confidence in my ability to apply myself in an industry environment and further encouraged me in my decision to pursue an engineering major.
