What I liked

At Planet it feels like everyone around me is always looking out for me, which is great. When I started I was nervous because I had not much experience with automated testing, but within a week I was completing tasks thanks to teammates going out of their way to show me the ropes. I felt like the work I did was making a real impact and I could directly see how I was contributing to the product. Even though this was Planet's first remote internship program, the logistics went flawlessly. They even provided reimbursement for meals at social events which would have originally provided food if they had been in person.

What I wish was different

Not much. I wish that I could have been there in person. Sometimes I felt odd not going to all of the optional company social events, seminars, etc. just because there were so many, and I was not too eager to do many of them remotely.

Advice

One nice thing about Planet is that different teams do totally different work (aerospace, hardware design, software design, etc) but everyone is still close-knit. I was told that if I wanted to join another team I could file a motion to. This leads me to my advice to anyone starting at a company: go beyond your team and poke around the bigger web of people and it will make your experience better.
