I liked being able to get real-life experience with interviewing sources and writing for an audience.
What I wish was different
I wouldn't change anything about my experience. I liked the people I worked with and I appreciated the work I was able to complete.
Advice
I would say that confidence and research is a big part of being successful in this position.

Weddings Editorial Intern
May - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA
What I liked
I loved that I wasn't treated like an intern and that I was able to use my voice in a way that I felt like I was actually a member of the company. I received so many clips this summer that I am excited to use in the future and it was just all around an amazing experience.
What I wish was different
The only thing that was kind of a bummer is that it was unpaid.
Advice
Go in with an open mind and be willing to put the work in because there are so many opportunities if you find them and ask for them!

Editorial intern
January - April 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA
What I liked
My supervisors gave me the freedom to pitch stories to them and maintain my voice as a writer while giving me pointers on structure for magazine and online writing. The office environment was friendly and welcoming, and everyone was encouraging and supportive of the interns exploring different sections of the magazine (e.g. home, food, entertainment).
What I wish was different
I wish I had started exploring different sections sooner. I got the chance to work with most of the editors, but I think I would've gotten more out of the internship if I'd been a bit bolder earlier in the semester.
Advice
Take the initiative and pitch stories that interest you. It makes research and writing much more enjoyable, and there are so many things in Pittsburgh that deserve to be written about that you'll definitely find something in your niche.

Weddings intern
August - December 2016 • Pittsburgh, PA
What I liked
All of the editors were really nice, and they gave you a lot of freedom to write blog posts and articles you cared about. It was also awesome to have your content going up online and getting into print during the internship.
What I wish was different
It is an unpaid internship
Advice
If you have more time than work - either ask for more work or start working on future blog posts and future articles that Pittsburgh Magazine can use after you move on!
